Is Cyber Warfare a World War III in the waiting?

Now, that’s the title of our presentation at TechSabha for Government security professionals. Which is why, I’m deviating from the usual round of corporate, network and user security I speak about.

When Einstein said that WW IV would be fought with sticks and stones, he may have been off the mark. ‘Cause it doesn’t take demolishing a country physically to say that we have fought WW III.

Welcome Cyber Warfare.

What WW III is likely to involve is silent intrusions into the nation’s networks and bringing down enemy deployments and installations quietly, without the use of physical aggression – Utilities, the finance structure, government establishments, transportation, and more – bringing a nation’s life to a standstill. Die Hard 4 says it of course. Coming to the real world, one can’t ignore the reported intrusions into government and defense establishment networks.

Secondly, information is everything – that’s why Colonel-Doctor Irina Spalko in Indiana Jones and the Story of the Crystal Skull is after one thing and one thing only – Knowledge. Knowledge of the enemy that lets you control and manipulate them to your advantage.

Watch this blog for comments from Government professionals on the topic. The conference is on the 12th – 15th of this month and we’ll be back with views from down there.
